The copy data problem has been with us since the dawn of the Information Age. Live applications spawn multiple copies of production data required to support essential application related services such as disaster recovery, backup, development and test, reporting and archiving. According to Gartner businesses typically maintain as many as 120 copies of production data creating a £29 billion a year annual cost.
Each category of copy data needs to be managed and supported with SLA’s (Service Level Agreements), which requires trained and skilled personnel and sophisticated software tools. Overall IDC (International Data Corporation) estimates that 65% of storage is consumed by copy data. The practicality of managing multiple data copies means organisations often struggle to meet the SLA’s for each application with a 2013 CIO Magazine survey concluding that 85% of projects were delayed because of data and environment provisioning delays.
Now enterprises can virtualise data storage just as they virtualised servers and networks enabling the instant availability of data that significantly reduces the requirement for physical storage. With copy data decoupled from infrastructure, capital intensive hardware, associated software licences and resource are largely eradicated delivering up to an 80% reduction in storage costs and up to a 70% reduction in network bandwidth costs. Overall the impact is significant releasing at least 5% of IT OPEX and delivering benefits within weeks.
Applications may be developed more quickly, tested more efficiently and deployed with improved resilience and agility, aligned with business objectives. Copy data virtualisation enables a radically simple, application centric approach that lets enterprises capture data from production applications, manage it more economically and use it where and when they need to.
This roundtable event will fully brief Executives from IT, Technology and Finance on the benefits of a virtualised approach to copy data management over a relaxed and informal private dinner at Wiltons restaurant. Established in 1742 Wiltons has consistently enjoyed a reputation as the epitome of fine British dining in London.
