Local Government 2.0 meets Enterprise 2020, the drive for Innovation

The brains behind London’s famous Ivy restaurant have wowed the capital’s restaurant critics by launching it’s new “younger brother”; The Ivy Market Grill. Local government did not need to know the result of the General Election to know that its direction of travel for the next few years will involve more austerity and continued cuts to budgets. With an emergency Budget to follow on 8th July, the financial outlook for town halls does not appear any easier.

For local government CIOs, key challenges remain how to get to grip with key issues such as enabling adult social care and pulling down the barriers to systemic transformation. A key enabler here is big data, which, according to one CIO, offers huge potential for innovation.

Arguably, pulling clinical and council data together opens a new frontier that can help save money, treat sooner and help deliver improved quality of life. Another issue is the interoperability opportunity and ambition offered by open APIs. At the same time as considering the present, local government CIOs – who are arguably the most innovative in the public sector - also have to consider the future.

What role should sharing services or business process outsourcing play? What about the relationship with organisations in terms of skills and talent? How ‘smart’ does the city want to/need to become? How will thinking on ICT and mobility develop?
New thinking must include what local authorities will look like in 2020 and how that environment should be supported by technology. If you like, how Enterprise 2020 meets Local Government 2.0.
