The new normal: Critical infrastructure and the cybersecurity conundrum

Date: 15th Nov 2018

Venue: The Dorchester, 53 Park Ln, Mayfair, London W1K 1QA

The traditional rules of network security no longer apply as organizations now face new challenges due to evolving cyber threats within critical infrastructure, requiring a fresh approach to cybersecurity. The conventional approach separated physical and functional network systems via - an 'air gap' between information technology and operational technology, however the rise of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has changed all that.

The benefits of the internet are many and varied. Data from a proliferation of increasingly affordable, connected and miniaturised sensors help deliver predictive maintenance, optimise operations and reduce downtime. But the challenge is clear: an explosion in the number of devices connected to the Internet – either individually or as part of an IIoT system – creates a multitude of IP addresses and each new IP address is a potential entry point for bad actors.

At this CBR Dining Club, in association with ForeScout Technologies, we will explore the challenge presented by this architectural new normal and examine the approach organisations should consider to protect their virtual and physical infrastructure. The issues we’ll seek to address will include:
- What is on the critical infrastructure network and how to classify categorize and monitor it
- Who can access the network and under what context
- How to orchestrate a security response in the event of an incident
- How to improve security without compromising operational uptime

And we’ll frame the discussion in the context of the latest regulatory requirements, notably the European Union’s NIS Directive that came into force in May and puts OT and the security of critical national infrastructure firmly in the spotlight.

So do join us for what promises to be an enlightening evening in the company of industry peers and experts.
